First adopted in 2023, the agreement reached a historic milestone when the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #96607d; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/news\/landmark-high-seas-treaty-reaches-major-milestone\">required 60 countries ratified it<\/a>. Its entry into force will provide long-awaited protections for international waters \u2014 vast, largely unregulated ecosystems threatened by overfishing, deep-sea mining, pollution and climate change.<\/p><p>Covering nearly two-thirds of the global ocean, yet with only 1 percent currently protected, the high seas contain more than 90 percent of ocean habitat and harbour extraordinary biodiversity.\u00a0<\/p><p>The High Seas Treaty reinforces the principle that safeguarding critical ocean areas is essential for human survival. Healthy high seas regulate currents and stabilize ocean temperatures \u2014 benefits that can be preserved while still supporting human livelihoods.<\/p><p>Once it enters into force in 120 days, the treaty will allow countries to establish marine protected areas beyond national jurisdictions, require environmental impact assessments for industrial activities, and ensure that scientific discoveries in the high seas are shared equitably. Its passage is crucial for achieving global goals such as protecting 30 percent of the world\u2019s oceans by 2030.<\/p><h2>Canada: Protecting North Atlantic right whale<\/h2><div>\u00a0<\/div><p>Another example of marine conservation activities is the protection of the North Atlantic right whale (NARW), one of the world\u2019s most endangered marine mammals.\u00a0<\/p><p>Once abundant along the eastern coast of North America, the species was driven to the brink of extinction by centuries of commercial whaling. Although whaling has long been banned, the population has struggled to recover due to a combination of human-driven threats and the species\u2019 own slow reproductive rate.<\/p><p>Transport Canada is actively working to\u00a0<a style=\"color: #96607d; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/tc.canada.ca\/en\/marine-transportation\/navigation-marine-conditions\/protecting-north-atlantic-right-whales-collisions-vessels-gulf-st-lawrence\">protect the endangered North Atlantic right whale in the Gulf of St. Lawrence<\/a>\u00a0by reducing the risks of vessel collisions in one of their key habitats.\u00a0<\/p><p>Since 2017, targeted measures have been implemented in a high-traffic area where the species is frequently observed. These include the designation of Vessel Traffic Management Zones (VTMZs), mandatory and voluntary speed and access regulations, monitoring programs, and enforcement of compliance.\u00a0<\/p><p>Mandatory protection measures apply to vessels 13 metres or longer within the VTMZs. Voluntary measures ask vessels to reduce speed to 10 knots or avoid sensitive areas such as the Cabot Strait, Roseway Basin and certain Gulf zones during periods of whale presence.\u00a0<\/p><h2>Technology to support marine conservation\u00a0<\/h2><div>\u00a0<\/div><p>International agreements and regulations play a significant role in achieving broad societal goals, but operationalizing them requires more detailed, concrete work.\u00a0<\/p><p>Marine conservation efforts need to be supported by increased monitoring of vessel operations and their impacts in port waters,\u00a0optimizing vessel performance and port resources, and adjusting routes to mitigate the effects on protected marine species and ecosystems.<\/p><p>GSTS\u2019 experience with high-resolution satellite imagery for vessel detection combined with our vessel tracking and analytics capabilities led to an idea \u2013<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-29d50dd elementor-widget__width-auto elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"29d50dd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Can we adapt our vessel detection AI models to instead identify whales at surface, and bring this data into an operational vessel tracking system?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c678e91 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c678e91\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span lang=\"EN\">Unlike many studies, which classify satellite data for conservation tasks and ultimately result in published papers with limited real-world utility, GSTS has developed an operational model to detect, validate, and integrate space-based whale detections for marine conservation.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-35f124c elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"35f124c\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-9c7122c\" data-id=\"9c7122c\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-598f20b elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"598f20b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"259\" height=\"251\" src=\"https:\/\/gsts.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Saving-Whales-detection-1.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium wp-image-896\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-b8b964f\" data-id=\"b8b964f\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-be04c4f elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"be04c4f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"254\" height=\"246\" data-src=\"https:\/\/gsts.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Saving-Whales-detection-2.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium wp-image-897 lazyload\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 254px; Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/epdf\/10.1111\/mms.70024\">Semi-Automated Detection of Right Whales (Eubalaenaspp.) in Very High-Resolution Satellite Imagery<\/a><\/em><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The task of detecting and labelling whales in an image is significantly more difficult due to the scarcity of training samples: whales spend most of their time below the surface, and for NARW, even spotting one is rare. This issue was resolved by increasing the sample size using two different methods.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through partnerships within the whale monitoring and research community, both within and outside the SmartWhales programme, a wide array of samples was obtained to provide a representative suite of whales as seen from space, under various conditions.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concurrently, image augmentation methods were employed to increase the sample size available for model training artificially.
